Dougherty County Commission
The
Dougherty County Commission met in work session on
Monday, February 25, 2008. The following items were
discussed:

Lisa Riddle of the Convention and Visitors gave an
update on the upcoming Snicker Marathon Energy Bar
Marathon. She reported that over 800 runners have
registered for the race from forty states across the
country. There will also be runners from Canada. She
expects over 1000 runners to be in the race before
the event officially kicks off on Saturday.

Commission discussed a request to rezone 14.002
acres at the northwest corner of Old Pretoria Road
and Camden Lane. Several residents were present to
show their opposition to this request, stating that
the rezoning would have a negative impact on their
quality of life in that area.

Don Buie was recommended for appointment to the Keep
Albany Dougherty Beautiful Board to fill an
unexpired term ending December 31, 2008.

Commission held discussion on whether they should
write a letter to members of the local General
Assembly delegation in opposition to the tax reform
proposal being sponsored by Speaker Glen Richardson.
The commission stopped short of voting to send the
letter at this time.
Albany City Commission
The
Albany City Commission met in its regular meeting on
Tuesday, February 26, 2008. The following items were on
the agenda:

The commission voted to extend the sign ordinance
moratorium for an additional 60 days or until such
time as a new sign ordinance is adopted by the Mayor
and Board of Commissioners.

An amendment to Article I of Chapter 16 of the city
ordinances was passed which establishes rules and
regulations for registration of vacant buildings and
related matters. Property owners will be given ten
days from notification that their property needs to
be registered and a plan of abatement of identified
issues will have to be addressed.

The commission passed resolutions to authorize the
use of SPLOST funds to install shade structures at
the Paul Eames Complex and declaring certain
property to be sold as surplus property

The commission also voted to authorize the execution
and delivery of the First Amendment to the MEAG
Municipal Competitive Trust which will allow the
Water, Gas, and Light Commission to received nearly
$90 million in energy credits over a ten year period
beginning in 2009.

$150,000 was approved for the code enforcement
department to assist with the demolition of
dilapidated structures throughout the city.
